B.C. Amateur Champion Has Spot In This Week’s Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada Event In Saskatoon

Fresh off a big win at Calgary’s Glencoe Invitational, Jared du Toit will get his first taste of pro golf at this week’s Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada event in Saskatoon. Du Toit, the reigning B.C. Amateur champion from Kimberley, has been granted a sponsor’s exemption to play in the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open. 

It will be the first professional tournament for du Toit, Canada’s top-ranked amateur player.

TOYOTA CITY, Japan – Team Canada Men’s Development Squad returns to the Chukyo Golf Club this week from June 14–17 for the 24th annual Toyota Junior Golf World Cup supported by JAL.

Leading the way for the Canadian foursome is Tony Gil of Vaughan, Ont., who will be returning to the event for the third consecutive year. In 2015, the 18-year-old University of Houston commit finished T10 to lead the Canadians.

He will be joined by teammates Charles-Éric Belanger (Quebec), A.J. Ewart (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Jack Simpson (Aurora, Ont.).

Brooke Henderson Had A Dramatic Playoff Win Over Lydia Ko In The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship At Sahalee

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Canada’s Brooke Henderson beat top-ranked Lydia Ko with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff Sunday in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship after overcoming a three-shot deficit on the back nine.

The 18-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ont., ranked No. 4 in the world, closed with a bogey-free 6-under 65 – the best round of the week at Sahalee – to match Ko at 6-under 278. Ko finished with a 67.

In the playoff on the par-4 18th, Henderson hit her second shot from 155 yards to 3 feet, while Ko’s second from farther back in the fairway left her with 20 feet. Ko missed to the left, and Henderson tapped in to cap a week that started with a hole-in-one on her fourth hole of the tournament and ended with a major championship.

All it takes is a search of #womensgolfday on social media to see that the inarguable event was a global success. Women’s Golf Day was founded on three core principles: engage, empower, and support.

Through these principles the event was designed to allow a simple and accessible platform to build a foundation and create a network to support the continuation of golf no matter the skill or interest level.

Albin Choi made the biggest move among the Top-10, gaining 102 spots in the world rankings after finishing tied for fifth at the Web.com Tour Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. It was the third-best career finish for the Golf Canada Young Pro Squad member and helped him move from No. 10 in the Canadian rankings up to No. 7. Choi picked up 3.08 world ranking points, his third-straight points-paying finish.

While Choi made the biggest move inside the Top-10, it was Adam Cornelson making the biggest move of the week with his win at Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada’s Bayview Place Island Savings Open. The Langley, B.C., native gained 882 spots in the world rankings after picking up his first career win while setting a new 72-hole scoring record on the Mackenzie tour. It was quite the turnaround for Cornelson, who finished 94th on the money list last year to lose his Tour status. After finishing tied for ninth at Q-School, he earned exempt status through the first four events of the year. The win was worth 6.00 world ranking points and moved him from No. 29 up to No. 14 in the Canadian rankings.

This Summer’s B.C. Amateur Championship At Pheasant Glen Has Special Meaning For The 13-Time Winner

It was the summer of 1967. Lester B. Pearson was prime minister, Canada was celebrating its centennial and a shy 15-year-old named Doug Roxburgh was playing in his first B.C. Amateur Championship. A half-century later, Roxburgh is still playing in the tournament he has won a record 13 times. 

This summer’s 114th playing of the B.C. Amateur at Pheasant Glen Golf Course in Qualicum will be an especially meaningful one for Roxburgh, who will tee it up for the 50th time. Roxburgh hasn’t missed one since playing in his first B.C. Amateur way back in 1967 at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.

Three Other British Columbians Finish In The Top 10

Adam Cornelson could be a poster child for perseverance. The Langley native has absorbed plenty of punches as he chased his professional golf dream the last few years.

Just last month Cornelson had to pull himself off the canvas and fight for survival on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit. He passed that test of nerves at qualifying school at Crown Isle in Courtenay and on Sunday finally delivered a knockout punch of his own.

The inaugural GolfBC Championship will have the usual 156-player field when it begins Thursday at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf & Country Club in Kelowna.

Actually, there will be one notable difference. When the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada makes its Okanagan debut, 155 men and one woman will be teeing it up.

Jacqueline Bendrick, a 20-year-old collegiate player from Mercer Island, Wash., has been granted a sponsor’s exemption into the $175,000 event. She will be the first woman to play in a Mackenzie Tour event since the PGA TOUR began running what was formerly the Canadian Tour back in 2013.

PARKSVILLE -- The University of B.C. Thunderbirds ended their season in style Friday with a complete sweep of the Canadian University/College Championships at Morningstar Golf Course.

The T-Birds won both the men’s and women’s team titles, while UBC senior Scott Secord claimed the men’s individual title and junior Kat Kennedy took home the women’s individual title.

Golf clubs, retail locations, and golf facilities across the country and around the world are participating in Women's Golf Day on June 7th to engage and encourage women and girls to play golf.

It's important that women have a positive experience around golf as they are responsible for many of the family decisions and are economic influencers.

Women’s Golf Day is a brand new international initiative to celebrate the women who currently play and to bring new women into the game and a number of courses and facilites in British Columbia will be front and centre with activities at several venues.

The UBC Thunderbirds saw a seven-shot lead quickly evaporate in Friday’s final round and had to settle for second place at the NAIA Men’s Golf Championships in Silvis, Ill.

The T-Birds had their worst round of the 72-hole event on Friday, when they shot a team score of 301 or 17-over par at the TPC at Deere Run.

They finished the event eight strokes behind the winning team from Oklahoma City University.

UBC coach Chris Macdonald likes the fact that this week’s NAIA men’s national championship tournament is returning to the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

The course, which is the site of the PGA TOUR’s John Deere Classic, reminds Macdonald of Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club, where the T-Birds play and practise all year long.

B.C. Amateur champion Jared du Toit is off to the NCAA Championship tourney in Eugene, Ore. Du Toit helped lead the Arizona State Sun Devils to a first-place finish at a NCAA regional tourney in Albuquerque, N.M. on Wednesday.

Du Toit, a Kimberley resident who is completing his junior year and won last year’s B.C. Amateur at Fairview Mountain in Oliver, shot rounds of 72, 73 and 75 to finish in a tie for fifth place at four-over par. The Sun Devils posted a 54-hole team score of 12-over par to beat the field by 12 shots.

Mary Parsons is apparently driving well on and off the golf course. The big-hitting 16-year-old Delta resident used her length off the tee en route to an impressive four-shot win at the CN Future Links Pacific Championship in Kamloops this past weekend.

Then after that win -- the biggest of her young golf career -- Parsons returned home and passed her driver’s test on Monday morning. “It has been a great few days,” she said with a laugh in an interview Monday night.

(May 16, 2016) NORMAN, Okla. – Simon Fraser University sophomore Chris Crisologo was today named to the Division II PING All-Region West team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Crisologo was one of 112 players across eight regions - East, Atlantic, Southeast, South, Midwest, South Central, Central and West – who earned all-region honors for 2016.

B.C. Girls Take Four Of The Top 6 Spots In Junior Girls Championship

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The final round of the 2016 CN Future Links Pacific Championship at The Dunes at Kamloops Golf Club unfolded in much the same way as the previous two – with the Junior Boys and Junior Girls fields in pursuit of Tony Gil and Mary Parsons.

Neither would be caught as the pair completed wire-to-wire victories to open Golf Canada’s championship season.

For her part, Delta, B.C.'s Mary Parsons came out of the gate with a Dunes women's course record 66 and never looked back (that 66 was matched in the final round by Coquitlam's Euna Han).

Samantha Richdale gained 24 spots in the world rankings after finishing in a tie for 45th at the LPGA Tour’s Yokohama Classic. It was her best LPGA result of the season in three tournaments. The result helped her moved up to No. 3 in the Canadian rankings.

Augusta James, who lost a spot in the Canadian rankings to Richdale, gained three spots in the world rankings after finishing in a tie for 11th at the Symetra Tour’s Self Regional Healthcare Foundation Women’s Health Classic in South Carolina. It was her fourth Top-15 result this season in five starts.

Jennifer Kirby gained 79 spots in the world rankings after finishing in a tie for 7th in South Carolina. Kirby’s best career finish on the development tour enabled the former Golf Canada National Team member to move up to No. 12 in the Canadian rankings.

Naomi Ko called it the round of her life and it could not have come at a better time for the 18-year-old Victoria native. A clutch five-under 67 in the second round of a 36-hole sectional qualifier at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash., earned Ko a spot in this summer’s U.S. Women’s Open.

Ko, a member of Canada’s national amateur team and former B.C. Junior Girls champion, topped a field of 48 players to earn the one spot available at the Monday qualifier.
