It was a transformative moment for our organization.

A virtual town-hall with staff in the summer of 2020 to talk about the tragic and senseless murder of George Floyd and reflect on what we were seeing and experiencing in the world around us. The team shared an honest and emotional conversation, and I was incredibly moved by the personal sharing, thoughtful insights on racial injustice, and the conviction that everyone brought to the call.

Many followed up with a willingness to play a role in what comes next for Golf Canada—a shared commitment to be an organization of impact that could lead through action. I look back to that moment as a catalyst for the important steps needed to make our organization and our sport reflect the multi-cultural diversity, inclusiveness, and acceptance that we all want as Canadians.

It was that commitment that led to the creation of Golf Canada’s Diversity and Inclusion Alliance and a vision for who we want to be in this important space.

SPRUCE GROVE, ALTA. – The Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship is set for July 27-30 at the Edmonton Petroleum Golf and Country Club in Spruce Grove, Alta., for the 107th installment of the event. The 72-hole tournament returns for the first time since 2019, after the pandemic caused the cancellation of Golf Canada’s 2020 competitive season.

The 110-player field features three of the Team Canada National Amateur Squad members; Mary Parsons (Delta, B.C.), Noemie Pare (Victoriaville, Que.), and Sara-Eve Rheaume (Quebec City, Que.).

More than half of the top 50 Canadians on the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) are in the field with 27, including 2018 and 2019 Canadian Junior Girls Champions Celeste Dao (Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot, Que.) and Emily Zhu (Richmond Hill, Ont.), respectively.

OAKVILLE, Ont. (Golf Canada) — Golf Canada in partnership with Canadian Pacific (CP) and LNG Canada has announced the fourth annual CP Women’s Leadership Summit presented by LNG Canada will take place virtually on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, with complimentary access.

The intent of the Summit is to bring together like-minded female leaders across business and sport to have important conversations about gender equity, representation, diversity and intersectionality. This year’s Summit will feature four sessions, running from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET, and will be hosted by TSN personality Lindsay Hamilton.

Like many athletes in a training environment over the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption to competitive opportunities for junior golfers in Canada. To facilitate the selection of participants for the 2021-2022 National Junior Squad, Golf Canada will hold a National Junior Selection Camp from August 29 through September 3 at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Caledon, Ont.

Approximately 50 junior boys and girls who have not reached their 19th birthday by August 1, 2021, will be invited to participate in the National Junior Selection Camp. The camp will include skills testing as well as a 54-hole stroke-play competition that will award World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.

Kent Gilchrist covered just about everything in a sportswriting career that spanned more than 40 years, but he had a particular affinity for golf. Not just the game, but the people who played it. 

Gilchrist, known as Cookie to his countless friends, died at his New Westminster home Wednesday night after a lengthy illness. He was 72. Cookie was larger than life. He could light up a room and fill it with laughter. He seemed to know everyone.

August was already shaping up to be a special month for Victoria Liu. Now it’s even better. The 18-year-old left-hander from Vancouver earned medalist honours at a U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship qualifier Tuesday at Seymour Golf & Country Club in North Vancouver.

She’ll be in the field at Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y., where many of the world’s top amateur players will gather for the 121st playing of the championship Aug. 2-8. Liu, who plays out of Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club, is off to Princeton University later in August to begin her studies and play collegiate golf at the Ivy League school.

OAKVILLE (June 29, 2021) – Golf Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee have announced Canada’s golf team nominated to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont. and Alena Sharp of Hamilton, Ont. will comprise the women’s team competing in their second Olympic Games, while Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont. and Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont. will represent Canada in the men’s Olympic golf competition.

“I am an athlete, but I am also gay. At the end of the day if I’m not talking about that part of me, I am doing a disservice,” says PGA of Canada Class “A” Professional Kylie Frederick.

Frederick says that this has been her mindset during the most recent years of her 19-year golf career.

Frederick started golfing at seven years old with her family on Vancouver Island. Her dad would take her out to the course, which helped her find her passion for the game. At 13-years old, all of Frederick’s attention was put towards becoming a golf professional.

At this young age, Frederick had not yet come out as gay. She was a golfer and that was that.

Take A Kid To The Course is a Canada-wide initiative encouraged by the National Golf Course Owners Association Canada to bring juniors and families to golf courses across the country. Take A Kid To The Course allows for a FREE round of golf for youth under 16 when accompanied by a paying adult at participating courses across Canada.

The program officially gets underway July 5th. Golf facilities around the province will be announcing their participation and whatever other promotions they may attach to the Take A Kid To The Course initiative.

In 2020, Golf Canada partnered with First Tee to launch First Tee – Canada. Together, the partnership will bring First Tee’s youth development emphasis to strengthen Golf Canada’s junior golf activities – previously conducted under the Future Links brand – that reach kids in communities, schools, and golf facilities.

Golf Canada will serve as the national headquarters of First Tee – Canada. First Tee chapters are being established in markets across Canada to deliver programs in their respective regions, with First Tee British Columbia being the first out of the gate.

Duncan’s Callum Davison will be bringing his mom and dad along for the ride as he plays the new Forme Tour this summer after winning last week’s qualifying school in Washington state. 

The 20-year-old former B.C. Bantam Boys champion topped the field at the Home Course in DuPont, Wash., with a 72-hole score of 13-under par. He earned a full exemption to the eight-event Forme Tour which starts later this month in Athens, Ga.

“This is huge,” Davison said of being fully exempt. “It just frees me up. I don’t have to worry about Monday qualifiers or the reshuffle. I will be able to play and do my thing. I don’t have to worry about if I am getting in (a tournament) or not.”

The Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit has released an eight-event schedule for Canadian-based players that concludes with tournaments in Kelowna and Victoria in late September and early October.

The schedule touches both coasts as it includes two tournaments in Prince Edward Island in late August and early September.

The schedule begins July 29 - Aug. 1 with the Mackenzie Investments Open in Blainville, Que. It concludes Sept. 31 - Oct. 3 with the DCBank Open presented by Times-Colonist at Uplands Golf Club in Victoria.

The GolfBC Championship at Gallagher’s Canyon in Kelowna goes Sept. 23-26. The tour’s regular Vancouver-area event will not be played this year.

For the second straight year, the CP Women’s Open scheduled for Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver has been cancelled. 

The LPGA event, which had been set for Aug. 26-29, is once again a casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current border and quarantine restrictions.

Golf Canada and tournament sponsor Canadian Pacific made the announcement late Wednesday afternoon.

When Dale Jackson asked a rules question 20 years ago, it would have been hard to imagine what that would lead to.

The member at Royal Colwood Golf Club on Vancouver Island may modestly say that his rise to the upper echelons of Canadian golf may be about being in the “right place at the right time,” but, other than the original incident that sparked his interest, chance really has had little to do with it.

It all started when Jackson was playing in the Colwood Amateur in 2001 and was unable to get a clear answer to a rules question.

Golf Canada has dropped an app update that is sure to get golfers pumping their fists!

Just in time for the 2021 golf season, the latest version of Golf Canada’s app now features the ability to set up Match Play, Skins of Stroke Play games against friends using Gross or Net scoring.

The Canadian Golf Hall of Fame enlisted the support of golf leaders, media, and historians to help create a list of the 50 most influential moments in Canadian golf history. The moments will be showcased online and Canadians are invited to share in the history and vote on their favourite moments.
