I told my wife it was going to be a tough day at the office, but she wasn’t buying it. She knew I was golfing. Again. And she knew this little one-day golf getaway was going to be different from all of the others.

After all, I was travelling in style. My day began at Helijet’s Vancouver Harbour terminal, where I boarded the 8:40 a.m. flight to Nanaimo. Did I mention the sun was shining? As luck would have it, it was one of those picture-postcard kind of days when we West Coasters really appreciate where we live.

The views were outstanding as our chopper flew low over the Lions Gate Bridge and out over the Strait of Georgia. Not even a couple of double-bogeys were going to spoil this day.

The guy who shot 59 didn’t win. Greyson Sigg of Augusta, Ga., had to settle for third place after he scorched Gallagher’s Canyon Golf & Country Club with a 12-under 59 in Sunday’s final round of the GolfBC Championship.

It was only the second 59 recorded since the PGA Tour Canada-Mackenzie Tour circuit started in 2013. Sigg finished the final event of the Mackenzie Tour’s British Columbia Swing at 17-under par. That was three shots behind winner Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa, Calif., who closed with an eight-under 63.

Inspired by daily inspirational messages from her mother, Calgary’s Kim Carrington completed her wire-to-wire victory Thursday at the B.C. Senior Women’s Championship.

Each morning, Carrington received an email from her mom, Shelley. The one she received before Thursday’s final round read in part: “Enjoy the moment. Play fearlessly. Breathe, inhale confidence. Feel your powers, feel your energy. Trust, commit. Love surrounds you. Play happy.” 

“She was my 15th club,” a tearful Carrington said after winning the B.C. Senior title at St. Eugene Golf Resort in Cranbrook.

First-round leader Kim Carrington of Calgary extended her lead in Wednesday’s second round and carries a five-shot cushion into Thursday’s final round of the B.C. Senior and Super-Senior Women’s Championship at St. Eugene Golf Resort in Cranbrook.

Carrington, the 2017 Alberta Senior Women’s champion, fired a four-over 76 on Wednesday and sits at seven-over par through 36 holes. Penny Baziuk of North Saanich, BC is alone is second at 12-over after firing a 77 on Wednesday.

The first four legs of the British Columbia Golf Fantasy Golf Tour Challenge are in the books and we have our up to date group of qualifiers for the Grand Prize final event in the PGA TOUR FedEx Cup Championship.

Next up...The U.S. Open.

He did not get the ultimate prize, but Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin did earn something else of note with his solo sixth-place finish Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open. 

Hadwin claimed one of three spots that were up for grabs at Hamilton Golf & Country Club into next month’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Hadwin also hoisted his fourth Rivermead Cup as low Canadian in the Canadian Open. He had high hopes of ending the long Canadian victory drought when he began Sunday’s final round just one shot out of the lead.

But no one was going to catch Rory McIlroy, who closed with a nine-under 61 to finish 22-under, seven shots clear of the field.

It was a banner day at Claremont Secondary and the Victoria school hadn’t had one of those in a while. 

“This is the first team (championship) banner we have had in nine years for the school, so it is exciting,” coach Shon Ryan said after his Claremont team won the B.C. High School AAA Golf Championship at Squamish Valley Golf & Country Club.

The five-man Spartans team of Willie Bishop, Michael Wu, Chase Basanta, Richard Zhang and Connor Watson put together a strong final round in the 36-hole event to beat Vancouver College by eight shots.

James Allenby has waited a long time to play in his first PGA TOUR event and now that he has finally achieved that goal the Langley native hopes to make the most out of it. “It is a massive opportunity that I am going to try and take advantage of by just playing my game,” Allenby said after winning the Monday qualifier for this week’s RBC Canadian Open.

If Allenby does play his game, he should be just fine. The 34-year-old has been on quite the roll of late on both the Vancouver Golf Tour and PGA Tour Canada-Mackenzie Tour circuit.

The Canadian drought on the PGA Tour Canada-Mackenzie Tour circuit officially reached three years Sunday when Frenchman Paul Barjon won the Bayview Place DCBank Open in Victoria. Langley’s Adam Cornelson, at the 2016 Bayview Place tourney, was the last Canadian to win a Mackenzie Tour event.

Barjon closed with a five-under 65 at Uplands Golf Club to edge American Doc Redman, the 2017 U.S. Amateur champion, by a single shot. Barjon, who previously won the 2016 Canada Life Championship on the Mackenzie Tour, finished the 72-hole event at 19-under par.

He played much of his junior golf there as a kid, so Brad Clapp clearly has an emotional attachment to Cultus Lake Golf Club. Clapp, the new Director Of Golf at the gorgeous, tree-lined par-63 executive course, is delighted to be back at the place where his love affair with golf got started.

And the former winner on the PGA Tour Canada-Mackenzie Tour circuit is more than a little excited about the changes he and his staff are making that Clapp thinks will help Cultus Lake thrive in the years to come.

An emotional roller-coaster of a week ended on a high Friday for coach Chris Macdonald and his University of B.C. Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams. Both teams staged dramatic final-round comebacks to win the Canadian University/College Championships at Firerock Golf Club in Komoka, Ont. 

The Thunderbird women edged Laval by just one shot in the 72-hole competition. The UBC men needed a playoff to beat Western Ontario. It was the fourth straight Canadian University Championship for the UBC women, who capped an incredible year with Friday’s win. Two weeks ago, they won the NAIA National Championship tourney in Oklahoma and with Friday’s victory they end their season with 10 wins.

ABBOTSFORD -- It was moments like this that Dan Swanson envisioned when he decided a couple of years ago to apply to regain his amateur status. A couple times on the back nine of Thursday’s final round of the B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship the 40-year-old found himself thinking back to past battles he’d had in provincial championship events in his late teens and early 20s. Those ones didn’t always end well.

He’d come close, losing a heartbreaker at the 1999 B.C. Amateur Championship at Storey Creek in Campbell River, for example. This time, 20 years later, Swanson sealed the deal with a brilliant back nine at Ledgeview Golf Club to finally claim that elusive provincial title.

ABBOTSFORD -- Shelly Stouffer was delighted with everything about her play at the B.C. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Well, almost everything. 

She wasn’t thrilled about her final hole. “I finished with a bang,” Stouffer said with a laugh after she four-putted the 18th green at Ledgeview Golf & Country Club on Thursday for her only double-bogey of the tournament. “I was trying to make the (birdie) putt. Oh well.”

Stouffer could have afforded to take three or four more whacks at it on the 18th green. The Nanoose Bay resident had arrived there with a seven-shot lead.

OAKVILLE, Ont. – Golf Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee have announced the four athletes on Canada’s golf team nominated to compete at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

The Canadian athletes nominated by Golf Canada for the Pan Am golf competition—which runs August 8-11, 2019 at the Country Club Villa—were determined based on an assessment of world rankings and head-to-head results among those with a declared intent to compete.

On the women’s side, 20-year-old Brigitte Thibault of Rosemère, Que. has accepted selection to the Pan Am golf team and will be joined by Mary Parsons of Delta, B.C.

ABBOTSFORD -- The leader in the clubhouse at the B.C. Men’s & Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Ledgeview Golf Club is. . .wait, there is no clubhouse. And that’s a shame.

It has been more than three years since fire destroyed the clubhouse at Ledgeview. In its place sits a large tent. Next to it are a couple of portable washrooms. The pro shop and restaurant are operated out of trailers at the opposite end of the parking lot. 

The golf course, meanwhile, is in absolute pristine condition.

The 2019 Western Canada Blind Golf Championship and the 2019 ISPS Handa Canadian Blind Golf Championship are being held back-to-back at St. Eugene Mission Golf Club in Cranbrook and Kimberley Golf Club in Kimberley, BC. 

These two competitions bring together highly skilled blind and partially sighted golfers along with their coaches, providing an opportunity to earn world ranking points.

Athletes will come from across Canadaand the United States as well as Internationally. Some competitors will compete in both championships and some will only compete in one. Each championship field will consist of 50 athletes and 50 coaches. Local clubs will assist with officials and volunteers to act as spotters for the competitors.

ABBOTSFORD -- In good times and in bad, golf has been a constant in Shelly Stouffer’s life. And even though we haven’t seen her on the provincial tournament scene the last three years, Stouffer never stopped playing. 

“I have been playing more lately,” the Nanoose Bay resident said after Tuesday’s first round of the B.C. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Ledgeview Golf Club. “My two sons (aged 11 and 13) are getting into golf, so I am going out there with them a little bit.”

Finding the time to golf became more difficult when Stouffer lost her husband, Ward -- a highly respected club pro -- to a heart attack in early 2017.
