American Lee McCoy Wins Season-Opening Event On Mackenzie Tour By 8 Shots At Point Grey

It wasn’t a banner weekend for Canadians at the Freedom 55 Financial Open, but at least one of them was smiling when the season-opening event of the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada circuit concluded Sunday at Point Grey Golf & Country Club.

And he didn’t even cash a cheque.

Richmond amateur Chris Crisologo, teeing it up in his first pro event on a sponsor’s exemption, played like a seasoned veteran at Point Grey. The 21-year-old rising star of Simon Fraser University’s golf team closed with a two-under 70 Sunday to finish the 72-hole event at seven-under par.

Three years after he should have won the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Rickie Fowler seems to be on the precipice of making his dream come true. A remarkable round of (-7) 64, which featured eight birdies and just one lone bogey has Fowler four strokes clear of Matt Kuchar and five clear of roommate Justin Thomas.

In 2016, Fowler was leading by two with just holes to play, but after driving it into the water behind the 17th hole, he was forced into a four-hole playoff, which he eventually lost to Hideki Matsuyama.

This year, on a sun-splashed Saturday where the usual thousands of Phoenix golf fans come out in droves, it was Fowler who set the torrid pace, with birdies on four of his first six holes to open up a five-shot margin. The lead would yo-yo back to as little as three, but Fowler really put his stamp on the round by making his final birdie on the par-4 17th.

Rickie Fowler finally has the tournament win he craves.

The Murrieta, CA native had come so achingly close to winning the 2016 Waste Management Open but after going into the water at 17 with a two-stroke lead, he lost in a four-hole playoff to Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama. Fowler cried anguished tears in the press conference afterwards because he had wanted to win so badly in front of his grandfather.

Disappointment the following two years were best summarized by a conversation he had with a local police officer upon leaving last year’s tournament.

As the officer consoled him and bid him goodbye until next year, Fowler said: “I just want to win this so bad.”

BC's David Rose and Alberta's Jamie Sadlowski have secured early season playing status for the Mackenzie PGA Tour Canada campaign.

At the 2018 Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada West #2 qualifier held at the Wigwam Resort’s Gold Course, West Vancouver's David Rose finished 4th (68-71-71-72 – 282 (-6)) and will be exempt for first eight events and subject to second re-shuffle.

Jamie Sadlowski (St. Paul, AB), the two-time World Long Drive champion, finished T9 and will be exempt for the Tour's first four stops. His Q-School experience was a bit of a roller coaster. He opened with a 3-over-par 75, followed with a 5-under-par 67 and then posted another 3-over-par 75. However, he closed out the event with another 5-under-par 67 on Friday under sunny and very warm temps with highs in the low-90s and light winds.

With the conclusion of the third of five Mackenzie Tour Q-Schools, two more remain on the schedule. The fourth will be staged at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland, FL from April 24-27 followed by the fifth at Crown Isle Resort Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, BC from May 1-4. The season kicks off May 31-June 3 with the Freedom 55 Financial Open at the Point Grey Golf and Country Club in Vancouver.

The first question came from nine-year-old Constanza Ordaz, who asked Rose Zhang something all frustrated golfers would like to know. “What does she do when she misses something, when she misses a shot,” the youngster asked Zhang. “What do you do?”

Zhang and everyone who had gathered at the Musqueam Golf and Learning Centre chuckled at Constanza’s question. “I wish there was a thing so you couldn’t miss on the golf course,” Zhang said. “But it’s frustrating. Golf is hard.”

Before she set foot for the first time on Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club, the site of this week’s CPKC Women’s Open, Zhang dropped by the Musqueam Golf Centre on Tuesday morning for a clinic organized by Golf Canada and the British Columbia chapter of the First Tee.

Just like it did back in 2005 and 2011 for the PGA TOUR, Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club is presenting a stern test for some of the best female golfers on the planet.

There were lots more bogeys than birdies in the first round of the CPKC Canadian Women’s Open. Only 18 of the 156 players in the field of the LPGA Tour event managed to break par.

Everyone is chasing 2021 U.S. Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso, who rattled off four straight birdies on her back nine and shot a six-under 66, a new tournament course record at Shaughnessy.

Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club got rave reviews from PGA TOUR players and proved to be a stiff test when it played host to the Canadian Open back in 2005 and 2011. 

Ashley Zibrik, Shaughnessy’s new Head Professional and Director of Golf, expects more of the same when a collection of the world’s best female players gather at the classic Southwest Marine Drive layout late next summer.

Shaughnessy was officially announced as the site of the LPGA Tour’s 2020 CP Women’s Open on Thursday. The tournament will be played over the Labour Day weekend, Sept. 3-6.

“Recently the Club has been asked to participate in a bid process which could see Shaughnessy host the Presidents Cup in 2023,” general manager Jason Sigurdson said in a recent note to members.

As he prepares for the 2023 CP Women’s Open at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, tournament director Ryan Paul knows he has a tough act to follow. 

The 2022 tourney, held this past summer at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, was a huge success and was named Tournament of the Year by the Tournament Partners of the LPGA at the recent season-ending awards ceremony in Naples, Fla.

The remaining two of four PGA Tour Latinoamérica Qualifying Tournaments came to a close on Friday in Argentina and Colombia, with three more Canadians earning status in 2017.

In total, six Canadians have earned status on the PGA Tour Latinoamérica by way of Q-school. The Canucks were led by Nova Scotia’s Ally Tidcombe, who finished solo fourth at the Argentina event for the strongest finish by a Canadian. With the result, Tidcombe is exempt through the first half of the season (subject to reshuffle for second half).

Golf is a numbers game and on the Korn Ferry Tour two very important numbers are 25 and 75.

Finish inside the top 25 on the Korn Ferry Tour points list, where Surrey’s Adam Svensson currently resides, and you earn yourself a promotion to the PGA TOUR. 

Right now, Vancouver’s Stuart Macdonald is focused on that other number: 75.

Players finishing the season inside the top 75 are guaranteed Korn Ferry Tour status for the following year. And they also get to participate in three post-season events where 25 more PGA TOUR cards are up for grabs.

A sport environment in which participants - athletes, coaches, volunteers, and officials - are exposed to negative experiences such as bullying can be harmful and cause individuals to quit.

We have decided to cancel two of our international amateur events – The R&A Student Tour Series Final at St Andrews and Carnoustie and The R&A Girls’ U16 Amateur Championship at Fulford, which were both due to take place next month. We have contacted all those involved. We will keep the status of the rest of the amateur championship season under review.

There’s an old saying that you can’t win the U.S. Open on the first day, but you certainly can lose it.

That’s definitely the case for the group featuring Rickie Fowler, Tiger Woods and Louis Oosthuizen. The trio combined to shoot (+28), with the South African’s (+7) 77 the best score amongst them, three better than Woods and his 80 and four ahead of Fowler’s 81.

Woods, coming up on the 7th anniversary of winning his last Major, came out to answer five questions from the media. “Not very happy, that's for sure,” said Woods of his round.

Congratulations to Steven Lecuyer of Bear Mountain Golf Resort, who won the 2019 Johnston Meier Vancouver Open with a score of 11-under par. Steven had three very consistent rounds, shooting 66 at McCleery, 69 at Langara and 68 at Fraserview to claim the $10,000 first place professional purse. Steven came from behind in Sunday's final round.

After round one, which the professionals played at McCleery, former two-time BC Golf Women's Champion Christine Wong lead the entire field after shooting 7-under par.
